Athena Mae
Athena has been binding books for over 20 years. Much of her work uses historic binding methods to convey contemporary meaning. Athena’s pieces are based on traditional binding styles but are often constructed in a way that challenges both the artist and the viewer. Books serve to expose us to stories, to teach us, and to develop our sense of the world. In her work, she uses the physical form of the book to give context to her own story.
In addition to being drawn to craft, Athena is deeply invested in social justice, inclusion and equity, with particular focus on creating safe spaces for transgender athletes.
Athena is a team lead and mountain bike racer with The Hustle Hive, mentor with Little Bellas, volunteer with DreamWakers and Food Link, and an extremely proficient petter of cats.
From 9(ish)-5(ish), she works for Autodesk Research leading the Autodesk Research Residency Program and acting as global lead for the Autodesk Pride Network.
